Q724. Why are emissions from petroleum and natural gas systems - onshore production represented by geographic areas instead of individual point sources?
A724. Reporters in the petroleum and natural gas systems - onshore production source category operate many pieces of equipment and production wells over large geographic areas. These reporters aggregate their total emissions across these sources within a 'basin' and submit a single report to EPA including emissions from all covered sources within the basin. To better represent the geographic area where these emissions occur, EPA has added a GIS layer to FLIGHT that indicates the boundaries of each basin where emissions emanate from.
