Q98. The landfill industry uses a portable meter that uses an IR method to determine methane and carbon dioxide concentrations. Has the EPA determined if these units are acceptable and comply with the accuracy required by the rule?

A98. Yes, a portable infrared monitor may be used to comply with the requirements of the final rule.  If the infrared monitor measures total hydrocarbons, a correction factor must be established.  Some infrared monitors operate in such a manner as to detect only methane; these methane-specific analyzer systems do not need to establish or use a correction factor.
