Q426. Will the GHG Reporting Program negate the need for the U.S GHG Inventory in the future?

A426. No. The data collected under the GHG Reporting Program will not replace the annual national GHG inventory. This report fulfills U.S. Government commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to report on annual national GHG emissions. It is also the best source of data for total U.S. GHG emissions across all sectors. The GHG Reporting Program focuses on particular sources of emissions, and does not include all emission sources as presented in the U.S GHG Inventory (e.g., many sources of agricultural emissions). The GHG Reporting Program will serve as a useful tool to improve the accuracy of future national-level inventories for certain source categories.
