Q724. Why are emissions from petroleum and natural gas systems onshore production segment and gathering and boosting segment represented by geographic areas instead of individual point sources?

A724. Reporters in the petroleum and natural gas systems onshore production and gathering and boosting source categories operate many pieces of equipment and production wells over large geographic areas. These reporters aggregate their total emissions across these sources within a ‘basin’ and submit a single report to EPA including emissions from all covered sources within the basin. To better represent the geographic area where these emissions occur, EPA has added a GIS layer to FLIGHT that indicates the boundaries of each basin where emissions emanate from.
