Q733. What percentage of emissions from petroleum and natural gas systems are reported under the GHGRP?

A733. EPA does not have an exact estimate of what percent of U.S. emissions are covered under petroleum and natural gas systems at this time. The petroleum and natural gas systems source category (Subpart W) requires reporting from facilities above an emissions threshold of 25,000 metric tons CO2e. It is difficult to quantify what net emissions occurr below the threshold. In addition, facilities below the threshold may not be directly comparable to facilities over the emission threshold due to differences in the types of emission sources covered. EPA will continue to analyze the emissions from reports as well as linking the information to the US GHG Inventory to identify what fraction of emissions from petroleum and natural gas systems are covered by the GHGRP.
