Q791. What is the difference between an Anaerobic Sludge Digester and an Anaerobic Reactor?

A791. An anaerobic reactor is an enclosed vessel used for anaerobic wastewater treatment, while an anaerobic sludge digester is an enclosed vessel in which wastewater treatment sludge is degraded anaerobically. Specifically, if the vessel is used to treat sludge, it is considered a digester according to section 98.350 (b) of the rule; however, if it is used to treat wastewater, it is considered a reactor.
